Its history is directly linked with Fafe Castle, which was built in the 12th century. It is considered one of the biggest castles in Portugal and Europe as a whole. The first mention of it comes from an order by Afonso Henriques to fortify the town against León (Spain).

The castle stayed under Portuguese control until the end of that century when Fafe became part of León. It was only in the 14th century that Fafe returned to Portugal under King Fernando’s reign. However, Fafe Castle still belonged to Spain for a long time afterward until finally being handed over back to Portugal in 1641 during João IV’s rule.
